Disney Princesses Dominate New 'Wreck-It Ralph 2' Trailer
This article is more than 3 years old.
As promised, we now have a second trailer for Walt Disney'sRalph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.The big coup for this flick, even if it's presumably just a cameo appearance, is the teased bit with all of the Disney princesses in the same room and interacting with each other. That's been the big no-no ever since Disney began turning the various female leads of their princess fairy tale movies (Little Mermaid,Sleeping Beauty,Moana, etc.) into a merchandising juggernaut. They may share the same T-shirt, but they will never look at each other or otherwise acknowledge the other's existence. And they essentially make up the bulk of the trailer. So it may be a bit spoiler-y in that sense, but it'll play huge in theaters.
The other big thing about this Thanksgiving's big Disney animated flick is that it is their first wholly-intended-to-be-in-theaters Walt Disney Animation sequel sinceFantasia 2000and their first narrative wholly-intended-to-be-in-theaters animated sequel sinceThe Rescuers Down Underin 1990.The Rescuers Down Under bombed ($27 million) and Fantasia 2000 underwhelmed ($93m worldwide on an $80m budget) in 2000. But otherwise, Walt Disney has never released a traditional theatrically-intended sequel to one of their animated movies.
Peter Pan 2: Return to Neverland ($48 million domestic/$110m worldwide on a $20m budget in 2002) and The Jungle Book 2 ($47m domestic/$135m worldwide on a $20m budget in 2003) were Toon Disney flicks that were pulled off the direct-to-DVD pipeline. Ditto Planes ($239m worldwide on a $50m budget in 2013) and Planes: Fire and Rescue ($151m worldwide on a $50m budget in 2014). And yes, I am aware that at least some of the Tinker Bell toons had overseas theatrical releases.
I guess I should note the delightfulWinnie the Pooh, which got crushed ($33 million on a $30m budget) byHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallowsin July of 2011. But Ralph Breaks the Internet is something entirely unique for the Mouse House. It's not a glorified direct-to-DVD sequel to a 1950s/1960s era classic, nor an IMAX-friendly special event that contains no conventional narrative. Even Rescuers Down Under arrived 13 years after The Rescuers, which may partially explain its grim fate sandwiched between The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. It's a conventional theatrical sequel to a relatively recent animated smash hit.
The other variable is that, for the first time since 2014, a new Walt Disney animated flick opening in November won't have to contend with a Walt DisneyStar Warsmovie opening in mid-December. Pixar'sThe Good Dinosaurhad its own issues after getting delayed from May 2014 to November 2015, but opening right beforeThe Force Awakensdidn't help. Moanahad to contend with Disney's attention being pulled toDoctor Strangein one direction andRogue Onein another. DittoCocoopening 19 days afterThor: Ragnarokand a few weeks beforeThe Last Jedi.
That all three of these biggies did well is a feather in Disney's cap, but we can't argue that the market share dominance didn't affect the comparative middle child. While the 2018 holiday season will be crowded per usual, the Disney offerings won't be as huge. I don't pretend to know the budgets forThe Nutcracker and the Four Realms(opening on Nov. 2, 2018, with no X-Men: Dark Phoenixto worry about anymore) orMary Poppins Returns(opening Christmas Day, which is a Tuesday this year). But I will argue, with much confidence, that Disney doesn't expect theNutcrackermovie to play like an MCU adventure nor does it expectMary Poppins Returnsto play like aStar Warsmovie.
So, with the added bonus ofWreck-It Ralphbeing a very popular movie, will the Thanksgiving Disney toon go a little farther by virtue of not being surrounded by two Disney-released 800-pound gorillas? We're never going to have a situation like late 2013/early 2014, whereFrozenran the tables for 2.5 months partially due to an utter lack of kid-friendly December/January fare. Wreck-It Ralph 2may benefit by virtue of its biggest competition (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,Creed 2,Aquaman,Mortal Engines, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Illumination's Grinch Who Stole Christmas, etc.) coming from other studios as opposed to inside the house.
Kudos, by the by, for the closing gag which deals with why the movie is called "Ralph Breaks the Internet" as opposed to "Ralph Wrecks the Internet."
